Beyond The Conflict… Bawku Royals, A Gift Of Peace!

The formation of Bawku Royals football club last year ushered in an opportunity for grooming Golden Generations in Bawku, new prospects, and development of the sport in the town. The club has a unique beginning that is filled with optimism–we did not abandon the kids during an intense ethnic war. Our name, logo, colors, and motto also tells a complete story of the emotional bond between the club and the people, which the club intentionally want to engage its supporters, sponsors, and partners in a more positive and meaningful way and encourage reconciliation among the people, promote a good image of the town, and be a source of joy in the homes of everyone.

The idea of establishing a football club started about six years ago when Alhaji Plato–one of my older cousins, now late, proposed to me with optimism to form one. He assured me there are lots of talented young players in the town to recruit, and that he will help manage the team for me. All he needed me to do was to just buy a couple of footballs and jersey to start with. Alhaji Plato was a lover of the sport, and he had appreciable experience in managing a football club. He was a senior management member of then Bawku United F.C (now defunct) in the 1990s.

I accepted his idea, but I did not immediately put it into action until one evening in November of 2022–four years later and few months after his sudden demise when God winked me to set up a soccer club for Bawku. I did not hesitate or struggled on choosing a name for the club. Somehow, Bawku Royals immediately came to mind and on January 01, 2023, Bawku Royals Football Club was registered at Registrar-General’s Department of Ghana to engaged in the activities of sports and by the end of July forty juveniles were successfully recruited from various schools in the Municipality notwithstanding an on-going war. Twenty adults were also recruited by the end of the year to compete in the Division Three league. Two former football players from the town were also sponsored for a coaching course organized by the Ghana Football Association (GFA). They are committed to the development of the kids and growth of the club.

The kids are happy for the opportunity and deserve every support to pursue soccer as a professional career. I have high hopes in the team and great prospects for the club. We will strive together as a club to achieve our collective aspirations, raise the visibility and value of our beloved hometown through the sport, and promote a positive image of the town. Our battle through sport in the midst of the war, patently defines our purpose for our hometown, and we are confident that beyond the conflict we will win! Support us!
